These views and opinions do not necessarily represent those of WA Asians For Equality staff, and/or any/all contributors to this site.

Dear Bellevue School Board and All,

It’s been a few weeks since Bellevue School District had 5 community cafes around so called racial equity topics, supposedly for the district to listen to the communities. There was a huge turnout of parents voicing objections against it, many repeatedly requested a follow up meeting to report to the entire community, its equity director even acknowledged and promised such. To this date we have not heard back anything about such follow-up, and the district has not disclosed what the findings are, including numbers such as parent attendance, district employee attendance, how many district affiliates and vendors attended. Yet, district employees are still on schedule to attend and to present at this “Equity from the boardroom to the classroom” conference ( http://wasa-oly.org/wasa/Equity18 ) May 23rd at DoubleTree SeaTac.

It looks as if community input were just a procedural public show. I’m looking at the board right here in front of me, I can see disparities and lack of equity in a few ways, shall I jump to the conclusion that there must be systemic and institutionalized discrimination ? Shall we start doing equity from this boardroom first before poisoning our classrooms?

Few people knew about the existence of this equity department until recently, we have already seen its divisive practices across the district in retrospect, such as regular school staff equity indoctrination, speakers with extreme view of identity politics and party politics, so called BOOM and SHOUT events treating different groups of students based on their skin color and gender.

Although school district is still very good, we have observed deteriorating trend during the past a few years, roughly the same period that this equity department has been operating since 5 years ago. People already commented lowering graduation rates and steady rise of school violence reported over the years at last board meetings. District’s high school national rankings also slipped down a few notches.

I’d like to remind the board that this is Eastside, not socialist Seattle, where government failures are always rewarded with additional taxes and additional bureaucrats. I call for disband of the equity department and make the district accountable to the taxpayers.

Thank you!

Kan Qiu

Seattle Times endorsed My-Linh Thai for reelection in 2017, and praised her for her work on racial equity locally and statewide. Progressivevotersguide.com also states “In her first term on the school board, she singlehandedly raised the issue of racial equity in education; because of her advocacy, racial equity is now a core guiding principle of the school board.”

However, there is not one single mention of “racial equity” on My-Linh Thai’s own campaign website. On her campaign home page, the word is “education equity”. On her campaign issues page, she listed many issues, but no mention of “equity” at all.

So which My-Linh Thai is the true one? The one she wanted her voters to believe or the one media praised about her. Or to whom she told the truth about her agenda while campaigning as BSD board member.

Now, Thai has won the reelection, and she is pushing forward her racial equity agenda in full speed. Superintendent Ivan Duran gave a big presentation on racial equity on March 16th. The school district has a 17 member equity team, and is creating racial equity policies. And the March 6th board meeting recording clearly showed that Thai was the one behind the entire racial equity policy push with help from Jones and Duran. She even wanted to push for the school board passing of the policy at first reading.

Why? Because equity is NOT equality. Racial equity == racial quota. Racial equity is WRONG. Our own Washington State Civil Rights Act says “The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.”

Thai knew that she could not run a successful campaign promoting racial equity. Our state law prohibits it, so she hid the truth from the voters.

We successfully stopped SB 6406, and we will not allow racial equity == quota policy at Bellevue School District.

Wondering what the Department of Equity has been doing? Pushing for racial equity. Their Report on Equity presentation was not shy about this racial equity agenda. Their “The BOOM Experience is a program designed for male students that racially identify as African, Black, Hispanic, LatinX, Native American, Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander or mix of any, who are in grades 7-12 in the Bellevue School District”. And their “The SHOUT Experience is a program designed for female students that racially identify as African, Black, Hispanic, LatinX, Native American, Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander or mix of any, who are in grades 7-12 in the Bellevue School District.” Why have dedicated programs for certain racial groups? Why not just programs for all who are interested?
